Mill Pond Garden Open Day for Hydrangea Heaven
One ticket admits one car with all its occupants: rain or shine. No Refunds – Tickets may be given as a gift.
Mill Pond Garden welcomes visitors for Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 10 AM to Noon to see the seasons return of the butterflies and special flowers: Hydrangeas, early lilies, early daylilies, roses, Monarda, waterlilies, and native Black Gamecock Iris, one of the most striking in the world, in glorious bloom.
Other garden marvels to see include the native Royal Fern, one of the largest ferns in the world, seldom seen in gardens since it needs to grow on the edge of a pond to achieve its immense size approximately six feet. The Royal Fern has a peculiar feature, a woody trunk like a tree, and as hard as oak. Mill Pond Garden has the largest and most varied collection of ferns that can thrive here or that can be seen any place in the region. Older than dinosaurs, ferns make up a wonderful atmosphere for a garden and come in evergreen and deciduous types, adapted to varied habitats of sun, shade, rock crevices, swamps, and in tree branches. Discover the world of ferns here, including some tree-growing epiphytic ferns.
Mill Pond Garden is on Red Mill Pond and has exclusive vistas onto the Pond with its rich wildlife. This 158 acre pond has no public or commercial access excepting Mill Pond Garden; it is a hidden gem, now glowing in the colors of many wonderful flowers and collections of plants that do well here in the Cape region, mostly native and or beneficial, and displaying ideas for wholistic gardening including wildlife habitat as a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat Garden. The public is welcome to enjoy the beauty, get ideas, and receive professional horticultural advice.
