Description
What is a Plant Tonic?
A Plant Tonic is an advanced formulation of enzymes, beneficial organisms (mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria), plant hormones aka plant growth regulators (PGRs) and other organic compounds to create a healthy soil/medium.
Application of a tonic will allow soil organisms and plants to both flourish. Plants will grow with sensational results!
Mycorrhizal Fungi
Mycorrhizal Fungi are a specialized type of fungi which form a beneficial relationship with plants. The fungi receive carbohydrates from the plant while the plant gains access to more water and nutrients. At the same time, the colonization of plant roots can act as a shield against pathogenic (bad) fungi and bacteria.
Types of Mycorrhizae:
Endomycorrhizae – penetrates the cortical cells of plant roots.
Ectomycorrhizae – creates a sheath of hyphae around plant roots.
Beneficial Bacteria
Beneficial Bacteria work just like mychorrhizal fungi. However, some bacteria have to ability to convert the nitrogen in the atmosphere into forms usable by the plant.
Plant Hormones or Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs)
Auxins – increase shoot elongation, rooting and the formation of flowers.
Cytokinins – stimulate bud initiation and root growth.
Gibberellins – stimulate cell division and elongation. Increases plant size (taller plants, bigger flowers and fruits).
Abscisic Acid – increases drought, heat and cold tolerance.
Brassinosteroids – help Auxins expand and elongate plant cells, help cell wall regeneration and help with drought and cold tolerance.
Humic Acids
Humic Acids are a variety of acids produced from decaying organic matter. They increase the soil/medium’s ability to hold plant nutrients (also known as the soil’s Cation Exchange Capacity). It’s also known to form chelates with plant nutrients to allow for better absorption of vital nutrients.
